Hepatitis Awareness: Act now! PDF Print E-mail

Last Updated ( Monday, 19 May 2008 )

World Hepatitis Day is Monday 19 May. Hepatitis Australia joins countries world-wide in asking ‘Am I No. 12?’ to raise awareness of the shocking statistic; 1 in 12 people worldwide are living with hepatitis B or C. This is 500 million people worldwide and over 10 times the number infected with HIV/AIDS. Between them, hepatitis B and C kill 1.5 million people a year, yet these conditions can be managed through screening, diagnosis, referral, treatment and prevention. In Australia there are up to 160,000 people living with chronic hepatitis B, and 200,000 with chronic hepatitis C. The time to do something about it is now.

2008 is the first year that a global hepatitis awareness campaign has been coordinated across 42 countries worldwide. This has created a tremendous groundswell in community action. Thousands of supporters around the world are writing letters to raise awareness and act immediately against viral hepatitis. To be a part of this world-wide emergency response in Australia we are asking you to write to your local Federal Member of Parliament.  We can help you do that right now...

1. Find out what federal electorate you live in by visiting the AEC website and following the on-screen instructions at: http://apps.aec.gov.au/esearch/
You will need to note the name of your electorate.

2. From the list of links below, click the name of your electorate to download a sample letter. The letter contains the contact details for your local Member of Parliament. Simply insert your personal contact details and any changes you require to the letter, print it, and mail it.
